The Two-Party System in United States Politics

The existence of several parties in the political system implies the differences between the parties’ consideration of come pivotal issues and their approach to image building and public reaching. Within the two-party system in US politics, the Republican Party’s and the Democratic Party’s websites have been reviewed. On the one hand, there is a similarity in both websites creating a positive state-changing image of their political party as a force capable of fighting the atrocities for a better future. On the other hand, the two websites are different in their appeal to a particular audience. Indeed, the Democratic Party prioritizes achievement and addresses current party members (Democrats). Republicans’ website communicates directly to the potential party members to enhance its power in the future (The Republican National Committee). Both parties seem to be successful in their efforts. However, it might be beneficial for Democrats to address the concerns of prospective party members to ensure the likelihood of their affiliation with the party.

Indeed, the Green Party website is directed at the smaller community that is encouraged to support local candidates with no national agenda disclosed (Green Party US). Overall, despite the persistence of the two-party system in the USA, it is insufficient to represent the multitude of opinions in the political domain of such a diverse country as the USA.

On the one hand, the benefits of the two-party system are in the political stability ensured by the defined nature and clarity of positions of the political powers. On the other hand, the rivalry between the two parties has negative implications in terms of the division of the country into two opposing camps. Moreover, the exclusion of other parties hinders democratic principles of governance. The overall dominance throughout the history of the USA is the major obstacle for third-party candidates, which is why it is unlikely that any third party will substitute either the Republican or the Democratic Party. To succeed in competing with the historically dominant parties, a third party would need to create a break-through agenda and present a competent candidate capable of challenging the political order.
