The first presidential debate held on September 29, 2020, pitted the incumbent Donald Trump with presidential candidate Joe Biden. The purpose of the discussion was to allow the two candidates to talk about their plans once they assume the presidency. However, things turned out differently, with a significant portion of the debate marred with unexpected scenarios. Although the debate offered an opportunity for President Trump to expound on his plans for the nation, numerous interjections and interruptions from him turned it into chaos.
President Trump continuously deployed personal attacks on Biden during the debate sparking outrage. For instance, the President stated that the military dishonorably discharged Biden’s deceased son from the military due to his drug use (First Presidential Debate). Such accusations changed the tone of the debate leading to a confrontation between the two participants as each tried to validate their point of view. Furthermore, President Trump talked over Biden, denying him the opportunity to express his views concerning questions asked by the moderator. As a result, tempers flared, thus undermining the effectiveness of the first debate between the two presidential hopefuls.
Consequently, the debate turned into chaos due to various interruptions and interjections by President Trump despite the opportunity to discuss real issues affecting American citizens. The confrontations led to increased animosity between the two, therefore diluting the credibility of their views and opinions during the debate. More so, the lack of decorum from the President led to personal attacks on his opponent. Such attacks showed his lack of empathy, mostly since it involved Biden’s deceased son. The first debate, therefore, failed to meet the nation’s expectations considering the forthcoming election period in November.
