Understanding the past helps society to realize and avoid mistakes in the future. Alas, the current military conflict between Ukraine and Russia has led civilization into a state similar to the Cold War. In the past, the tensions between the United States and the USSR led to both countries amassing weapons at a massive scale in a technological race for a military advantage (Biedermann, 2022). Moreover, both countries have exhibited ideological pressure on other nations in an attempt to prove that their way of living is superior (Abrams, 2022). This state of affairs led to the eventual dissipation of the Soviet Union without the need to conduct an open war between the two countries.
Nowadays, the situation is different, as Russia has already begun its military advancements. However, there are many striking similarities between the current situation in the world and the past Cold War between the United States and the Soviet Union. Many nations have united in their attempt to dissuade Russia from continuing its invasion by severing ties with its institutions. Investment projects, scientific studies, and even sports events where Russians were involved are being actively nullified, putting the country under a metaphoric dome (Stone, 2022). There is a rise in the production of weaponry and military vehicles in many states, especially ones near the current aggressor (Abrams, 2022). Unlike the first Cold War, Western governments are more united than before and should be able to successfully protect their and their allies’ interests. In conclusion, as with the Cold War of the twentieth century, countries have stopped conducting business with Russian organizations. Many nations had to put their military forces on high alert due to a potential threat from Russia, as it continues to present a threat to their peaceful existence.
