Introduction
US-Russia relations can be described as complex, as both countries are perceived as strong. However, America brings prosperity and supports democracy, whereas Russia’s policy is based on terror and fear. The relationship between the two countries is complex and is often viewed as a form of competition.
The Russian invasion of Ukraine showed the necessity to reconsider relations with this country and find ways to support Ukraine. To analyze the relationships between Russia and the United States, it is necessary to understand the historical context and the role of the Russian war in Ukraine, and to explore possible ways to resolve the issues in the relationship.
Historical Background of US–Russia Relations
The most significant relationships between Russia and the US emerged in the twentieth century, particularly after World War II, which marked the beginning of intense competition between the two countries. Let’s analyze the historical background of US-Russian relations. The nuclear arms race and the Cold War were the most significant aspects in both countries’ histories. Moreover, throughout history, the US and Russia have been competing with each other, which has caused various challenges and crises. For instance, after World War II, although America and Russia had an alliance, Russia refused to get help from the United States (Council on Foreign Relations).
A few years later, the nuclear arms race occurred. During this period, the relationships between countries were tense, and war was a real possibility. However, various agreements were signed, and the conflict was avoided.
Modern Conflicts and the Impact of the Ukraine War
In the 21st century, countries had partnerships and developed their relations. Nevertheless, Russian ambitions were growing, and many conflicts occurred between the two countries. Since 24 February 2022, the relations between Russia and the US have been strained, as the US supports Ukraine and has made various decisions and steps to reduce Russia’s power and influence.
Since 2022, the development of US-Russia relations has not been positive, as Russia opposes NATO and America’s values and brings harm and destruction to the world. As the world’s leading power, America does its best to resolve the conflict, so sanctions and other limitations are imposed to stop Russia, which has made US-Russia relations difficult. The economic sanctions have a significant impact on Russia and the global economy, which serves as a constant topic of debate in American society.
It is essential to stop the Russian terror, and America can do it. These actions will benefit the US, as its influence and values can increase and be supported globally. Moreover, according to Antony Blinken, this conflict is not only between two countries; it is a crisis with global consequences (Mbah & Divine, 148). It was already seen in Ukraine that Russia would not stop and could continue achieving its goals with the help of armed conflicts.
However, some argue that economic sanctions and financial support for Ukraine harm the US and decrease its impact worldwide, so the United States can become weak and unable to solve further challenges. The deep economic connections between the US and Russia should be considered in this case. Both countries were powerful internationally, so their trading relationships were developing.
As a result, economic limitations on Russia contribute to a decrease in market access, which in turn leads to an economic crisis (Mbah & Divine, 146). In this case, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has led to difficult economic consequences that can lead to a global crisis. Despite this, strong support for Ukraine is needed to solve the issue.
Future Prospects and the Need for Global Stability
US-Russia relations and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine would be challenging to mend as long as Vladimir Putin and the current government rule the country. The view of the current Russian President is unreal and destructive (Aleksashenko). That is why it is impossible to aggregate or at least understand the relationship between Russia and the West until Putin is no longer the President. The most appropriate variant to solve the issue is to continue supporting Ukraine and stop Putin’s terror.
Only global changes in Russia, not only in government but also in life views, can help bring peace and ensure safety and stability. In this case, countermeasures are required, such as additional sanctions and offensive measures to halt the war and mitigate Russia’s global impact (Aleksashenko). America should establish a strong understanding of the role of Russian terror and do its best to ensure safety and stability in the world. As a result, the relationships between Russia and America at the current stage cannot be adequately developed. Nevertheless, the US should demonstrate a strong position and ability to quickly and effectively react to issues created by Russia.
Conclusion
To conclude, US-Russia relations can be characterized as complex and challenging. It is essential to consider the historical context of these relations, particularly after World War II, when intense competition between countries emerged. At the beginning of the 21st century, US-Russia relations improved. However, Russia’s cruelty and invasion of Ukraine showed the necessity to intervene with the United States and support Ukraine. As a result, America imposed strict economic sanctions and other limitations to solve the issue. In this case, US-Russia relations can be enhanced only when Russia’s current government and life-views change.
