The Profession of Arms: A Human Resources Sergeant

The profession of arms represents a massively important role in the management of the state security and the related issues. People involved in the profession of arms must develop a specific skillset that contributes to alignment with the requirements and standards of the profession of arms. By reinforcing the standards in question, a Human Resource Sergeant (HRS) will contribute to a more accurate compliance with these standards and guidelines in soldiers.

The very concept of the profession of arms is exceptionally complicated. Particularly, the White Paper issued by the U.S. Army on the subject matter states that the answer to the question of what the profession of arms is as a fully formed definition does not exist yet (The U.S. Army, 2010). One could state that providing civil citizens with the required protection and safety constitutes the essence of the profession of arms in the present-day U.S. context.

However, the U.S. Army is presently facing multiple challenges on the path to meeting the specified standards. Namely, the necessity to remain balanced constitutes the core challenge for the American Army over the past couple of decades (The U.S. Army, 2010). In turn, maintaining this balance represents one of the core roles of the army’s leaders. Specifically, as an Army leader, one must balance the relationships between the core areas of expertise within the military context and the operating environment that will emerge in the future (The U.S. Army, 2010). Maintaining the described type of balance is central to ensuring that the needs of civil citizens, particularly, their need for safety and security, are met (The U.S. Army, 2010). Therefore, as an Army leader, an HRS must keep the specified type of balance within the U.S. Army in check.

Furthermore, the Army’s professional culture must be supported and upheld by am HRS so that soldiers could remain motivated and engaged in the core tasks associated with serving in the military. Currently, the professional culture of the U.S. army represents that one of shared meaning, namely, “the shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterize the larger institution over time” (The U.S. Army, 2010, p. 9). The provided interpretation of the Army culture allows the troops to remain functionally effective and responsive toward the core tasks. In turn, as an HRS, one must encourage the identified principles of unity and shared culture to dominate the Army environment and serve as the foundation for developing the necessary values in soldiers.

Overall, the functions and role of an HRS in the Army profession can be summarized as reinforcing the key standards for behaviors, attitudes, and decision-making, as well as promoting the relevant values to soldiers. Similarly, ensuring that the balance between the core areas of expertise within the Army and its operating environment is maintained represents one of the crucial tasks of an HRS (The U.S. Army, 2010). Meeting the specified requirement will allow an HRS to improve the Army’s performance substantially.

By promoting critical values encouraged by the U.S. Army, an HRS will lead to a significant increase in the troops’ compliance with the set standards and requirements, thus, enforcing security. Providing soldiers with the necessary encouragement, awards and promotions, as well as mentoring and, whenever needed, penalties, an HRS plays a critical role in the functioning of the Army. Specifically, an HRS ensures that the extent of soldiers’ professionalism and skill level align with the set requirements. As a result, maintaining the extent of the Army’s performance becomes possible.
