Various prison programs adopted in the United States can have a critical impact on inmates in many different aspects. These programs aim to rehabilitate prisoners by providing them with educational opportunities, professional skills, as well as therapeutic and social support. First, prison education programs can significantly influence inmates’ life by providing them with opportunities to acquire education and skills that can be useful after their release. Educated inmates typically have a higher level of self-esteem, cope better with reintegration after release, and are less likely to return to prison.
Second, vocational programs offer prisoners the opportunity to gain practical skills and some work experience, which can also help them successfully integrate into society after their release. Involvement in work activities can also improve the mental state of inmates and provide them with structured pastime (Kosiak, 2021). Furthermore, therapeutic and social programs, such as group therapy, anger management training, and addiction programs, can help individuals develop their self-regulation and social interaction skills, which may reduce the likelihood of reoffending. From this perspective, these programs are effective to promote inmates’ integration in society.
However, it is worth discussing whether access to prison programs should be granted to all inmates. In some cases, especially when it comes to inmates who pose a high degree of danger to society, certain restrictions may be necessary. For example, if an inmate has been viewed irredeemable or continues to commit crimes within the prison, it may be appropriate not to grant them access to certain programs (Kosiak, 2021). Thus, there may be cases when individuals committing severe crimes should be excluded from some types of programs to prevent further negative effects on society. Still, attending prison programs can help an inmate change behavior, improve relationships and lifestyle, change habits, and enhance reintegration into society upon release.
