Potential Expansion of BRICS Alliance and Its Role in the Changing Global Political Order

Introduction

The sociopolitical landscape is changing globally, with some nations losing control and others emerging as significant players in the political arena. For decades, various alliances among specific countries have enabled them to address issues, collaborate, and explore ways to gain greater benefits. Among global alliances is BRICS, which focuses on bringing together the emerging economies of the world and stabilizing their trade and investment opportunities.

Definition of BRICS

First, it is essential to define BRICS. The abbreviation “BRICS” stands for the developing national economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (Library of Congress, n.d.). Foreign ministers of these countries first met informally in 2006; subsequently, more formal annual summits began in 2009 (Library of Congress, n.d.). The BRICS summit typically takes place once a year, and the venue changes annually (Library of Congress, n.d.).

2023 Summit

The last meeting was held in August 2023 in Johannesburg, South Africa (Chuttel, 2023). The agenda of the nation members was to discuss ways to grow the group, which aspires to be a geopolitical alternative to Western-led organizations (Chuttel, 2023). The decision to add the “+” symbol to BRICS, creating BRICS+, was made in an effort to broaden the group’s involvement (Library of Congress, n.d.). Over forty countries have expressed interest in joining the global economic forum, according to South Africa, which will host the 2023 summit (Library of Congress, n.d.). Therefore, due to the trade and investment benefits associated with the engagement in BRICS, many countries seek participation.

Conclusion

Hence, BRICS is one of the international coalitions that aims to unite the world’s growing economies and stabilize their trade and investment possibilities. The acronym BRICS refers to Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, which are all developing nations. The main topics on the BRICS summit agenda will be addressing and collaborating on numerous economic, political, and social concerns. Many nations are interested in joining the BRICS due to the advantages of trade and investment.
