Meaning of Leadership from a Law Enforcement Perspective
Police leadership means proficiency in two key spheres: morale and professionalism. If a police leader can maintain high morale among subordinates, they will strive to do their best and work more effectively. Professionalism is essential for building public trust, improving collaboration with civilians, and increasing the potential for recruits (Lewis, 2022). Hence, morale and professionalism are central aspects for any police leader.
Connection Between Leadership and Psychology
Psychology and leadership are closely connected, as knowledge of psychology enhances effective leadership. Successful leadership depends on knowing how to inspire teams and organizations; psychology has long studied this approach. Emotions are central to the charismatic leader’s appeal, and effective leaders must possess emotional intelligence (Rigglo, 2021). Hence, psychology is what enables leaders to be more effective in their roles.
Leadership Theories and Relevant Examples
The police can utilize various leadership theories based on circumstances. The “great man” style revolves around leadership as an inherent trait that cannot be taught (Cherry, 2022). “Great man” leaders are inspirational, despite often lacking formal training, with Abraham Lincoln a notable example. The trait theory revolves around inherent traits that make a person better suited to become a leader (Cherry, 2022). These traits include self-confidence and extraversion, which are frequently found among leaders.
Contingency and situational theories revolve around environmental variables that determine the style and leader that are more suitable (Cherry, 2022). For example, if the police are investigating a drug case, they can assign an experienced officer as the lead. Then, they allow him to assume an authoritative leadership style, as he is more knowledgeable in this field.
However, the police employ various leadership theories to achieve specific goals. Behavioral theory stresses that leaders must be taught to lead (Cherry, 2022). This is why police officers undergo additional training for this task. The participative theory is based on subordinate contribution and shared decision-making (Cherry, 2022). Police teams of equally qualified individuals can use it to brainstorm during investigations.
Management theory, using the “stick and carrot” approach, can be used to reward successful officers and punish underperforming ones (Cherry, 2022). The relationship theory focuses on leader-subordinate relationships, where the leader inspires and coaches the subordinate. For example, the newest police recruits are often coached by more experienced officers. Hence, the abovementioned theories can be, and are used in law enforcement.
