Introduction
Having recently attained the legal age to vote, this will be my first time casting my vote. When deciding, it is essential to consider information about a politician’s qualifications and program of action if elected. Los Angeles has been established as the most populous county in the United States. As a result, some of the most pressing issues of concern in my county are high crime rates and gangs, as well as homelessness in the city.
California District 34
I reside in the county of Los Angeles, state of California, Sacramento District 34, and am a final year university student. In this area, an important issue, in my opinion, is crime and gangs. For example, in a news article, Vives et al. (2023) talk about how the residents of a small town in Los Angeles County are afraid to live there because an entire family was recently killed there. In my opinion, the police should control and reduce such events, as they are not coping with their duties at the moment.
US House Representative
Background
Congressman Jimmy Gomez is the US House Representative for Los Angeles County, California. He represents District 34 of the Democratic Party. Congressman Gomez has been diligent in his office and has sponsored several bills that would benefit his electorate.
The Stable Families Act
The first is the “H.R.8327, The Stable Families Act”, which seeks to establish a permanent National Housing Stabilization fund and ensures that low-income families are not evicted through moratoriums (GovTrack, 2023). On his official Campaign website, Congressman Jimmy has addressed several pertinent issues in the county of Los Angeles. Some of the most pressing issues facing the residents of Los Angeles are a lack of basic housing and homelessness.
The Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act
A second bill he cosponsored is “The H.R.1847, The Rent and Mortgage Cancellation Act”. This bill provided a moratorium to residents paying rent and mortgages throughout COVID-19 (Congress, 2021). A third bill Mr. Gomez sponsored, among others not captured here, is the “H.R.2676 For the 99.5 Percent Act,” which seeks to impose increased tax rates on decedent estates (Bill Text, 2023).
Personal Opinion
I am pleased with his sponsored bills and would vote for Congressman Gomez. There are no aspects of the first account that I do not like, other than its weak implementation. Regarding the second account, I like that the government cares about financial well-being. Thus, Gomez’s representation can be called satisfactory as he attempts to improve living conditions. I would vote for Gomez in the next election because I like his politics. What I like about the first and second bills is that they support the population and the poor. I do not like that he raises taxes without explanation or apparent reason.
California Assembly Member
Background
Assemblyman Tom Lackey, a Republican, is the member of the Assembly in my home, Sacramento District 34. Assemblyman Lackey highlighted some of his contributions to the legislature on his campaign website, such as the Testing Act.
Bills
One of the bills the assemblyman sponsored is AB 31: Office of the Child Protection Ombudsperson, which looks into the welfare of children in California (Simon, 2021). A second piece of legislation he sponsored is “AB 42: Unemployment insurance: Advisory Committee on unemployment insurance.”
Conclusion
I found the bills sponsored by Mr. Lackey irrelevant to our current economic difficulty; hence, I did not like or support them. Two deputies from my district are trying to make it better for the residents. In doing so, they do useful things like sponsoring bills to help people. However, they do not talk much about some of the area’s problems, such as crime and security. I am satisfied with the bills related to financial support, except for one that raises taxes.
