Communist Regime in China
As countries develop, they need to develop new strategies to maintain the regime. Yang’s article describes what methods are used in China to maintain the stability of the installed system. The country’s rapid economic growth led to natural changes in industry and infrastructure (Yang 35). These changes have an impact on society as well, so the government takes various actions and introduces new policies to control society. These actions are primarily aimed at maintaining the power of the Communist Party (CPC) and primarily affect the political and economic spheres in China (Yang). However, the regime supported by the CPC is often associated with the oppression of citizens’ rights and illiberal approaches to politics.
Advantages of Chinese Ruling
The author emphasizes that the strategies used by the Chinese government were effective. For example, during the Asian Financial Crisis, it was the regime that contributed to the maintenance of order and the rapid recovery of China (Yang 40). However, the government’s focus on results does not consider the ways in which they are achieved. The laws passed led to many social issues, including the demolition of houses and ineffective and unethical healthcare (Yang). The main reason for this is the government’s desire to achieve stability while satisfying its own political interests.
Drawbacks of Chinese Regime
Despite the external success of the regime, it is not aimed at the well-being of society. While the government claims positive reforms to reduce corruption and improve policy transparency, actual practices vary significantly (Yang 48). For example, China’s law enforcement system, including the police, courts, and procuratorates, does not strive to improve public safety but has clear goals to reduce crime (Yang 47). This often leads to unethical practices and social inequality.
Moreover, the regime strives to eliminate all politically disadvantageous individuals who may pose a threat. Thus, despite their political and economic effectiveness, the governance strategies implemented by the Chinese government have created unfavorable living conditions for citizens in which human rights are constantly violated.
