Introduction
The problem of crime growth is one of the most disturbing for modern society, as it has many negative consequences. First of all, this concerns the creation of a threat to the well-being and life of society, especially for the most vulnerable population. In addition, this issue carries many economic and political consequences that can negatively affect the country.
Crime in Las Vegas, the world’s entertainment hub, presents a tremendous threat to the safety and well-being of its citizens. Every year, a large number of studies and specialized organizations strive to find a solution to limit it. Finding effective crime-reduction measures is critical to creating a safe and pleasant living environment.
This research seeks to investigate alternative crime-fighting techniques in Las Vegas, with a special emphasis on community-oriented policing as the proposed response. This is because this agent can help motivate and encourage more effective and productive activities to combat crimes and illegal actions on the city territory. Implementing community-oriented policing in Las Vegas is the recommended solution to reduce crime and foster trust between law enforcement and the community. Within the framework of this research paper, a historical case and effect analysis will also be conducted, which will provide an understanding of which factors most strongly influence the increase in the degree of the crime problem.
Problem
Before considering measures and recommendations that can contribute to reducing the crime problem in Las Vegas, it is necessary to determine what this issue is and what contributes to its spread. Statistical studies show that “the 2020 crime rate in Las Vegas, NV is 281, which is comparable to the U.S. average, but which is higher than in 85.8% U.S. cities” (“Crime rate in Las Vegas,” n.d., para. 1). In addition, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Departments keeps weekly statistics on the crime rate in the city (Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Departments, n.d.). This information helps to confirm the need to implement measures that will contribute to the reverse trend of this problem.
Of particular importance is paying attention to why crime rates do not stop growing in the city. Poverty, drug misuse, and unemployment are all factors that contribute to crime in the Las Vegas community. Some people experience hopelessness and desperation as a result of these factors, which makes them more likely to engage in criminal activity (Brownstein et al., 2021).
According to Light et al. (2020), the consequences of crime go beyond victims, affecting social cohesiveness and impeding economic progress in society. Several techniques to combat crime in Las Vegas have been tried throughout the years, ranging from enhanced police presence to crime prevention projects. However, long-term and sustainable measures are still required to combat crime properly.
Historical Cause and Effect Analysis
The next step in this research is to conduct a historical causes and effects analysis. The value of this process is gaining an understanding of which factors in a neighborhood like Las Vegas have the greatest impact on crime growth. The social, economic, cultural, and environmental circumstances formed during the historical development can provide valuable insight into the problem under discussion. The first factor is economic disparities, which are manifested in high rates of unemployment and poverty in this region (Jonathan et al., 2021). A large number of individuals suffer from unsatisfactory housing conditions, food insecurity, and a general lack of resources to lead a full-fledged lifestyle, which contributes to their commitment to criminal activities.
You can also add that a critical factor is a lack of social services. This indicator implies the inability of parts of the city’s population to receive a high-quality level of educational services, as well as healthcare, mental health services, and other social support systems. Another historical factor is the growth of gang activities and substance abuse, which are quite widespread in Las Vegas. They manifest themselves in crimes that are based on violence, theft, assault, domestic violence, and drug trafficking. These factors are not the only ones, but they are of the greatest importance in the historical context.
The highlighted aspects that most strongly affect the crime rate in Las Vegas have numerous negative effects. The leading ones are threats to the safety and life of people who live in this city. In addition, the high level of illegal activity causes numerous concerns not only for residents of Las Vegas but also for newcomers, which is reflected in the low value of property in this territory. Regarding the population, the main consequence of the increase in crime is the division of the community and the biased and stigmatized attitude towards those individuals who come from poorer areas. This aspect is also manifested in the growth of mental problems that are caused by constant concern for the well-being and security of the individual.
Potential Solutions
Community Policing and Neighborhood Watch Programs
Community policing, in conjunction with neighborhood watch programs, may be an effective strategy for combating crime. Involving citizens in the safety of their area may help build confidence between the community and law enforcement. This aspect is due to the need to create measures to spread awareness about the need to involve city residents in solving the problem of crime.
Moreover, there is a need for educational measures regarding approaches that residents can apply independently without involving law enforcement. Officers in community police are encouraged to form personal ties with locals, obtaining vital insights into local problems and concerns. This connection will provide an opportunity to increase engagement and cooperation between these parties significantly. The main condition is to ensure the availability of community police to contact in case of emergency and urgent situations.
Advantages
- Enhanced trust and cooperation between the community and law enforcement.
- Improved understanding of local crime patterns and specific needs.
Disadvantages
- Resource constraints may limit the extent of community involvement.
- Achieving active participation from all community members can be challenging.
Problem Oriented Policing (POP)
A proactive approach to crime prevention is Problem-Oriented Policing (POP). POP strives to build specialized and targeted tactics to solve reoccurring difficulties by addressing the core causes of criminal activity (Hinkle et al., 2020). Law enforcement finds and executes effective solutions to decrease crime and protect public safety and security through thorough analysis and partnership with the community.
Advantages
- POP focuses on addressing specific crime problems by identifying their underlying causes, allowing for more effective and efficient strategies.
- POP relies on data analysis and research to inform decision-making, ensuring that interventions are grounded in evidence and have a higher likelihood of success.
Disadvantages
- Retrofitting existing spaces can be costly and time-consuming.
- Some criminals may adapt to the changes and find new ways to commit crimes.
Recommended Solution: Community-Oriented Policing
Among the numerous remedies suggested, community-oriented policing seems to be the most viable technique for dealing with crime within the Las Vegas area. This strategy promotes cooperation between law enforcement and the community in identifying and resolving local concerns. It is also highlighted that the “capabilities of public service users and other citizens can improve the outcomes of public services such as policing and the criminal justice system” (Loeffler & Bovaird, 2020, p. 32340). Therefore, this research paper will pay special attention to this alternative as the most effective for solving the problem under discussion.
Advantages
- Strengthened trust and cooperation between the community and police.
- Tailored crime prevention strategies that address specific neighborhood needs.
Disadvantages
- Requires extensive training for law enforcement officers to adopt the community-oriented approach fully.
- Potential resistance from traditional law enforcement structures due to a paradigm shift.
Costs and Benefits
While establishing community-oriented policing may need early training and resource commitments, the long-term benefits significantly surpass the costs. This is due to the fact that “people can do much to ensure their own safety and that of their families and belongings by reducing the opportunities for crime” (Farrell, 2022, p. 446). The safer area with lower crime rates may contribute to greater property values, successful local businesses, and a better quality of life for people.
Implementation Steps and Expected Outcomes
To successfully implement community-oriented policing in the Las Vegas neighborhood, the following steps are crucial:
- Conduct comprehensive training for law enforcement officers on community-oriented policing principles and practices.
- Foster open dialogue and collaboration between police and community members through regular town hall meetings and community events.
- Develop data-driven crime reduction strategies tailored to the specific needs and challenges of the Las Vegas neighborhood.
Expected Outcomes
- Reduced crime rates, particularly in areas that have historically experienced higher criminal activities.
- Heightened residents’ sense of safety and security, encouraging community engagement and unity.
Conclusion
By implementing community-oriented policing, a safer and more unified community with active participation in crime prevention may be created. Combating crime in the Las Vegas area takes a collaborative effort by citizens, police enforcement, and municipal government. By embracing the proposed solution, Las Vegas can transform its neighborhood into a place where everyone can be proud to live. As a resident of Las Vegas, I believe it is critical that all its members actively support and engage in crime reduction activities. As a result, participating in neighborhood watch programs, attending community meetings, and working with law enforcement will help to create a safer and more secure environment.
