Broward’s plan for 2022 is to provide funding for all housing projects designed to serve seniors. Such a legislative initiative is due to the fact that more and more seniors are “aging in place” or moving to South Florida (Broward County, 2022). Solutions are needed to meet the affordable housing needs of this population. County officials fully support the Sadowski Affordable Housing Act, which is all about supporting vulnerable people with housing problems (Sadowski Housing Coalition, 2021). Authorities also support a legislative plan that would ensure that people with mental illnesses are reduced in prison. This initiative is part of the Stepping Up program, which has been successfully implemented at the national level (Hanenberg, 2021). Collecting data on people in prison who are dependent on substances or have a mental disorder makes it possible to assess progress toward reducing the number of such people in jails. This initiative fits well with the county’s overall plans to rehabilitate prisoners and bring them back into the community.
Broward plans to provide full funding for the Flood Resiliency Initiative. The project also aims to provide safety in the event of sea-level rise across the state. If the project is implemented, municipalities and regional sustainability organizations will be required to provide information on planned projects to mitigate climate change (Broward County, 2022). The emergence of such initiatives is due to the climatic conditions of the region. For example, it has only been two years since Hurricane Sully caused devastating and fatal flooding on the coasts of Alabama and Florida (BBC News, 2020). To allow such a situation to occur again would be to show the authorities’ indifference to the safety of the country’s citizens.
