America’s Government: Legislative Branch of U.S. Government

The United States of America has traditionally been a reference point for many supporters of the democratic system. The Constitution is based on the principle of separation of powers. In this regard, the US government has three branches of government: legislative, executive, and judicial. These branches are independent, but each has the right to control the other two Trethan, 2022). The most powerful and influential of the three components is the legislative branch.

The legislative branch consists of two bodies that perform their functions. The first chamber is the House of Representatives. It is the lower house consisting of a total of 435 seats, but the decision of Congress can increase the number of these seats (Trethan, 2022). The second chamber is the Senate which is considered the upper house. Both houses of Congress are united by the fact that the majority system elects them. The differences in the electoral part are only in the number of seats and a higher qualification for entering the Senate.

Despite the fact that all branches are claimed o control the other two, the most power in governing belongs to the legislative branch. The legislature occupies a leading place in the system of separation of powers. It has an indirect impact on the activities of the executive and judicial authorities due to the fact that the laws specify the features of the organization and functioning of the executive and judicial authorities. For example, the judicial branch decides whether the laws are appropriately carried out by the executive branch and do not violate the Constitution. However, the law-making process is in the power of the legislative department. The existence of the other two units directly depends on the legislative branch.
